Clematis – perennial creepers. Depending on the variety, they can reach heights of 2 to 5 meters, attract a variety of colors of flowers and leaves, an abundance of flowers (500 or more at the same time) and flowering time (up to 3 months).
Consider the features of the plant.
Clematis is photophilous. It is better to plant on flat or sunny areas that are slightly shaded during the hot season. It is better to choose the east, southeast or southwest sides. Sites must be protected from the wind.
Clematis loves water-permeable, fertile, medium-density soil. It should be neutral or slightly alkaline, well-fertilized and loosened to a depth of 60-70 centimeters.
The best landing time is April-May. The decorative effect is achieved in the second or third year. Planted in prepared pits 60x60x70 or 70x70x70 centimeters. If the soil is not suitable for growing clematis, then it is completely replaced. Drainage is poured at the bottom of the pot with a layer of 10-15 centimeters, then fertile soil, 5-8 kilograms of humus, about 50 grams of superphosphate, a handful of ash. If the soil is acidic, then add 50-100 grams of slaked lime.
Planting material can be biennial, rarely annual plants or rooted cuttings. When planting in young plants, the root neck is buried by 5-10 centimeters, in adults – 10-12 centimeters, provided that the soil is not heavy. It is recommended to protect the roots from overheating (shade them, mulch). Water the plants at least 1 time in 5-10 days, in hot weather – 2-3 times a week.
During the growing season at least 3-5 times, feed with organic fertilizers (mullein solution 1: 1 with the addition of superphosphate (20 grams per 10 liters) or full mineral fertilizers in the same amount). The first top dressing is carried out during the period of active growth and the beginning of budding, the second after mass flowering and pruning, the third and subsequent after the next flowering and pruning.
Clematis pruning is as follows: varieties and forms belonging to the Jacqueman, Vititzella, Integrifolia groups bloom on annual shoots, so in the fall or early spring it is necessary to trim their aerial part at a height of 5-10 centimeters from the soil level. Varieties and forms of clematis from the Patens, Florida, Armanda, Gorny group and some other species bloom in spring on overwintered shoots. In autumn or spring, their highly developed healthy shoots only shorten, and all dry, weak and sick cutout. If this group has cut all the shoots completely, then flowering will not come in the spring, but later, it may not come at all.
For the winter, clematis is sheltered in those areas where roses are sheltered. After pruning in October-November, plants are sprinkled with earth, peat, sand, covered with spruce branches, sawdust, snow or other materials with a layer of up to 20-30 centimeters. With this preparation, clematis can tolerate frosts up to 40 degrees.
When growing clematis, support is needed. Form, height, material are imported from the capabilities and requirements of each lover of this plant.
